I'll always remember the first time I fell in love. I was five and I was sat in the back of my Dad's car as we made our way down to Devon to see my grandmother. I was feeling car sick. More my fault for reading that copy of Whizz-Kids than my Dad's fault for ignoring the speed limit on winding country roads. The radio was on. I listened intently as through the speakers came a sound I think I kind of liked. Three minutes later I was totally smitten. A minute after that I was totally sick.

The song in question was, and I guess still is, Silence is Golden by The Tremeloes. In the ensuing twenty years I have had my fair share of dalliances with other songs. The Wonder of You by Elvis Presley, Waterloo Sunset by The Kinks, Sonnet by The Verve; to name a few. God Only Knows by The Beach Boys is now my favourite song, but I don't think you forget your first love. And I don't think you actually stop loving them. I know I haven't.

And for the record, the first girl I fell in love with? Andrea. Definitely Andrea.

  3. No Nick, that's not the point. They are just songs I have loved at some point and still do. The fact that they are about love is just coincidence. Maybe - as a self-confessed romantic - my subconscious has drawn me to them, but for the most part I just liked the tune to begin with.

  4. I agree to some extent Sarah. Although I wouldn't go so far as to say it's a whole mile ahead. Maybe a yard or two.

  7. The Beach Boys are the greatest band ever. Pet Sounds the greatest album. God Only Knows the greatest song.
